| Kahler, Helge (2001): More Than WORDs - Collaborative Tailoring of a Word Processor. In: Journal of Universal Computer Science (j.ucs), Vol. 7 (9), S. 826-847 Abstract: Tailorability (or adaptability) of software becomes more important with the increasing use of off-the-shelf-software. On the other hand, computers support the work of many groups which in turn have to tailor a commonly used software to support individual as well as group needs. This includes not only groupware, i. e., software that directly supports collaborative work, but also single user software. Research has shown that often adaptations to single user software are distributed among colleagues, thus leading to a systematization in a group’s adaptations. Based on this observation an empirical field-study on the collaborative tailoring habits of users of a particular word processor was carried out. Based on these and literature research an add-on to this word processor was developed which provides a public and a private repository for adaptations as well as a mailing function for users to exchange adaptations. Some notification and annotation mechanisms are also provided. Results of two forms of evaluation indicate that users of different levels of qualification are able to handle the tool and consider it a relevant alternative to existing mailing mechanisms. |

| Lemken, Birgit; Kahler, Helge; Rittenbruch, Markus (2000): Sustained Knowledge Management by Organizational Culture. In: Proceedings der Tagung HICSS-33 (Maui/Hawaii 04.-07.01.2000) Abstract: Preserving and fostering knowledge is the vital interest of a network-like virtual organization. The decentralized and geographically distributed organizational structure inhibits knowledge flow. The particular conditions of knowledge management in virtual organizations are discussed by the example of an empirical study we carried out in a service company. We analyze how technical and organizational aspects influence knowledge sharing and transfer. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting knowledge transfer. It is shown how an existing knowledge sharing tradition had to be extended and which drawback it had concerning technology use. To improve knowledge flow within the organization a web-based knowledge base was introduced. This initiated a process of externalizing tacit knowledge and is meant to introduce new ways of knowledge transfer to the organizational culture. In fluid virtual organizations sustained knowl-edge management means to establish an organizational memory that is flexible and adaptive to changing requirements. This is best achieved by a strong organizational culture that emphasizes knowledge sharing by the use of various communication channels. |

Abstract: Im Zusammenhang mit der geplanten Verlagerung des Parlaments und von Teilen der Regierung von Bonn nach Berlin fördert das Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft, Forschung und Technologie (BMBF) Projekte, die sich mit der Zusammenarbeit räumlich verteilter großer Organisationen beschäftigen. Das POLITeam-Projekt hat dabei das Ziel, die asynchrone Zusammenarbeit der beteiligten Anwenderorganisationen durch die Einführung und „kokonstruktive“ und evolutionäre Weiterentwicklung eines Softwaresystems für kooperatives Arbeiten zu unterstützen. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt den Design- und Entwicklungsansatz von POLI-Team, gibt Beispiele für die Umsetzung und dokumentiert Erfahrungen aus dem Projekt. |

Abstract: Die Entwicklung von Groupware ist durch ein produktorientiertes, von einzelnen Anwendungsfeldern abstrahierendes Vorgehen geprägt. Die dabei entstehende Software erfüllt aber häufig nicht die Anforderungen, die Nutzer in konkreten Anwendungsfeldern an sie richten. Dies soll hier gezeigt werden am Beispiel eines Suchtools, das in einem marktgängigen Groupwareprodukt zur Unterstützung räumlich verteilter telekooperativer Arbeit realisiert war. Die sich aus der unzulänglichen Realisierung dieses Suchtools ergebende kokonstruktive Reimplementierung basierend auf der Programmierschnittstelle des Groupwareproduktes wird beschrieben. Abschließend werden Konsequenzen diskutiert, die sich aus dieser Fallstudie für eine auftragsorientierte Weiterentwicklung von Groupwareprodukten ergeben. |

| Kahler, Helge; Stiemerling, Oliver (1997): Einführung eines CSCW-Systems zur Kooperationsunterstützung im Komponentenentwicklungsprozeß. In: Industrie Management 13 (1997) 6, S. 43-46. Abstract: Es wird ein Konzept zur Kooperationsunterstützung im Komponentenentwicklungsprozeß vorgestellt. Das Konzept basiert auf Anforderungen eines realen Industrieszenarios (Hüttenwerk als Auftraggeber und zwei Ingenieurbüros als Auftragnehmer) und wird momentan in einem Projekt bei den beteiligten Industriepartnern umgesetzt. Zentrales Element unseres Ansatzes ist die integrierte Organisations- und Technikentwicklung mit Partizipation aller Beteiligten. In einem zyklischen Prozeß wird ein konstruktionsorientiertes CSCW-System (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) im Anwendungsfeld eingeführt. Auf der einen Seite werden die dabei auftretenden organisatorischen Veränderungen moderiert; auf der anderen Seite muß das technische System laufend an die diversifizierten und dynamischen Anforderungen der verschiedenen Kooperationspartner angepaßt werden. Daher wird auf technischer Seite ein Hauptaugenmerk auf die anpaßbare Gestaltung des Gesamtsystems gelegt. Abschließend wird ein Überblick über die erwarteten Entwicklungen in den betrachteten Industriebetrieben gegeben. |

Abstract: This paper is about experiences with the evolutionary and participatory development of a search tool for a groupware system. After the description of different software engineering approaches and their use for evolutionary and participatory software development the POLITeam groupware project is presented. The procedure of how the search tool for POLITeam was developed including interviews, workshops and the usage and evaluation of prototypes is described. The resulting search tool is presented. The paper concludes with remarks about the usage of participatory design methods for the introduction and customization of generic groupware in different organizational settings. |
